Montemor-o-Novo, located in the heart of the Alentejo, has a rich history dating back to the Lower Palaeolithic.
It rises above the highest point in the regioninitially served as town centre which, over time, expanded beyond its walls.
It was captured by the forces of D. Sancho I in 1203receiving his first charter that same year. A construction of medieval castle is attributed to this period.

After a few years of abandonmenthas been through several restoration phases during the 20th century. It is classified as National Monument since 1951.
