Montemor-o-Novo is part of the iconic Route of National Road 2, one of the longest in Portugal, crossing the country from north to south. This route offers an authentic journey, revealing landscapes, culture and gastronomy. In Montemor-o-Novo, travellers can explore the imposing castle, stroll through the historic centre and taste Alentejo cuisine. Our municipality is an essential stop on the EN2, offering award-winning wines, regional products and genuine Alentejo hospitality. Km 500 - Ciborro

Coming from the north, enter the municipality of Montemor-o-Novo and in the village of Ciborro you'll find Km 500. At the Atabueira Dam you can have a different experience with the Ski Clube do Alentejo. Take a short diversions towards Lavre and visit Monte Selvagem (animal reserve).

São Geraldo and Fazendas do Cortiço

Back on the EN2, you'll reach the village of São Geraldo, which owes its name to the saint. Visit the Anta do Estanque (MN) inside the village and the Anta Grande da Comenda da Igreja (MN) on the way out to the city of Montemor.

Taking the EN2, you pass Fazendas do Cortiço, which owes its name to the large number of cortiços (artificial "houses" created for bees to produce honey).

City of Montemor-o-Novo

Continuing south, enter the town of Montemor-o-Novo. When you reach Av. Gago Coutinho, turn right at the first traffic light onto the EN2. Take the road towards Escoural, at the exit for Alcácer and Sines.

Stop in town for a visit and go up to the Castle, visit its Interpretive Centre. Pass by the Archaeology Museum, the Ethnology Centre-Local Museum and the Chapel of Our Lady of Visitation and appreciate the architectural heritage of the Historic Centre.

Santiago do Escoural

Returning to the EN2, head towards Escoural, passing through Reguengo/ São Mateus. As you enter the village of Escoural, you can quench your thirst at the Bicas Fountain next to the parish church and enjoy the large chimneys that were once used to produce sausages. You can visit the Gruta do Escoural Interpretive Centre and the Gruta do Escoural (National Monument).

Anta-Chapel of Our Lady of Livramento

On the way back from the Gruta do Escoural, you can take a small diversions and head towards the Anta-Capela de N. Sra. do Livramento on the municipal road 1079. Return to the EN2 and take the road towards Casa Branca, where you'll find the railway station that connects Barreiro - Beja/ Barreiro - Évora.
